Eva Jacobson Named Director of Legal Incubator

Eva JacobsonEva Jacobson ‘16, a UConn Law graduate and immigration attorney, has been named director of the Connecticut Community Law Center.

The center, an initiative of UConn School of Law and the Hartford County Bar Association, is a legal incubator that helps lawyers develop solo legal practices. The lawyers provide reasonably priced legal help to low- and moderate-income clients who could not otherwise afford a lawyer.

Jacobson has extensive experience in immigration law, having worked at the Hartford Public Library for more than three years assisting clients with their naturalization applications, among other immigration matters. She also worked at Lawyers Without Borders for seven years, managing several U.S. Department of State grants ranging from $750,000 to $1.25 million. She currently serves on the City of Hartford Commission on Refugee and Immigrant Affairs and as chair of the Board of Directors of the Charter Oak Cultural Center.

Jacobson will continue her law practice, which she established in 2018 at the center. Her practice focuses on immigration, custody, divorce, landlord/tenant, criminal, and Social Security Disability cases.

“Without access to justice, marginalized groups are unable to exercise their rights and are extremely vulnerable to discrimination and abuse,” Jacobson said. “We have an opportunity at CCLC to help people who have traditionally been underserved by the justice system, which is essential to promoting a fair justice system that is accessible to all.”

Jacobson takes over as director from Mark Schreier, a former civil litigator who helped found the center in 2017. The Hartford County Bar Association honored Schreier with the 2018 Liberty Bell Award for his work.
